Le7,000,000 Scholarship Awards Announcement
The Sierra Leone Community Association of Chicago is pleased to announce the establishment of the Cleo Hanciles
Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Effective 2006-07 academic year, the association will award three (3) scholarships for eligible students attending
Fourah Bay College. The aim of these distinguished scholarships is to nurture the spirit of public service and
academic freedom as cornerstone of national development.
The late Cleo Hanciles was a patriotic visionary, principled humanist, public intellectual, passionate defender of
academic freedom, fearless critic of authoritarian rule, prolific writer, lecturer at Fourah Bay College, lecturer at the
Ghana Institute of Journalism, member of the National Policy Advisory Council, and Pan-African theoretician with
profound influence on progressive politics in Sierra Leone.
Who can apply?
Any female or male student in good academic standing with demonstrable financial need can apply for these
prestigious scholarships. Qualified applicants are required to submit an SLCAC Scholarship Application Form, most
recent college transcript, a 500-word essay on career goal and commitment to public service, and list of three
references.
Interview & Screening Committee
A Scholarship Committee in Freetown, comprised of eminent individuals with impeccable sense of fairness, will
screen initial applications and interview qualified applicants. Their recommendation will be forwarded to the Executive
and Board of Directors of the SLCAC for final selection of awardees. All tuition will be paid directly to Fourah Bay
College on behalf of awardees.
